Ryder Cup 2014 - Gleneagles
The European Tour and Ryder Cup staff challenged the PVE creative team to come up with a ‘never seen before’ spectator fan experience for their client Standard Life Investments for the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. At the heart of the spectator village we created ‘The Ryder Cup Team Experience’ within a 40 metres x 25 metres tent. At the beginning of the unique experience the fans had to choose to play for either Team Europe or Team USA, then the participants would enter their chosen teams USA or Europe’s locker room. Here the fans were treated to a video message from Cur0s Strange or Sam Torrance where they set the scenet - it was Sunday of the Ryder Cup - 12 points all and your game was all square playing the 18th at Gleneagles - NOW GO WIN THE RYDER CUP! The tension was high
You were then chaperoned to the 1st golf simulator where we had the 18th tee shot of Gleneagles created on the software. You then were announced on the tee via a microphone and your nerves were jangling. You played the tee shot and depending on where the ball finished you scored either 1 , 2 or 3 points for your team. You then moved on to the next simulator through the surround sound of chanting European or USA fans where we had created the pitch shot into the 18th green- Again depending on where you ball finished from your pitch shot determined the amount of points you scored. Finally you moved onto the putting green where you had the chance to have a putt and win the Ryder cup for your team.
At the end of the experience you scanned your wrist band into to the computer and it told you had scored 5 points for team Europe for example – you had contributed to the overall scoreboard for your team. Finally you had the chance to have a picture taken with a makeshift Ryder Cup, which you were able to send onto your social media channels giving the whole experience a wider reach. Over 4000 people enjoyed the experience.
Also during practice days we created an idea for The European Tour to encourage fans to walk the whole course. We had stained pods every 3 holes where the fans could scan in to say they reached that point and there was messaging on each pod - saying that you had walked 3.2 miles and burnt ‘x’ amount of calories. The aim of the experience was to show the health benefits of golf . This was funded by The European Tour. We have now provided fan experiences at 3 Ryder Cups.
