The Evolution of Golf Simulators
Golf simulators are an extremely important piece of equipment for us here at Provision, they are one of our most popular features to have at a golf fan activation. They are great as they allow us to create scenarios for golf fans that they might not necessarily ever be able to experience in real life.
Golf simulators are not a new invention, in fact, the first indoor simulators date back to the 1970’s. However, back in the 70’s these were simply viewed as a novelty and with the poor gameplay graphics and inaccuracy of tracking the ball it was something that never took off.
Fast forward to 2005 and the first golf ball tracking system that used radar technology was introduced. This acted as the catalyst for the rebirth of the indoor golf simulator. With modern day graphics and software design, the indoor simulators are now very accurate and have phenomenal gameplay graphics.
This had a huge impact on how we at Provision now produce fan activations at golf events. For example, this year we built and activated on behalf of Callaway at 11 European Tour events where we delivered a combined long drive and nearest to the pin competition. Winners at each event would win a custom fitted Callaway Epic Flash driver. This gave fans at European Tour events a chance to take a break from watching the action and give it a go themselves and enjoy some friendly competition too!
At this activation, we used Foresight simulator technology as well as bespoke graphics for both the driving range and nearest to the pin hole. The driving range featured custom Callaway Epic Flash branding and the nearest to the pin hole was the 17th hole at the Earth Course in Dubai which is where the European Tour’s Race to Dubai finale is held. 99% of golf fans will never have the chance to play the Earth Course in Dubai and this activation gave them the chance to feel what it’s actually like to play this course, providing a much more memorable experience!
“Watching people take part in the Callaway activation has been great! People get two shots to warm up before they take the all important one that will be the decider as to where they sit on the leader board… people absolutely love it and get really into it. It has been such a pleasure to work on this project and represent Callaway at the European Tour Events” Phil Davies, Senior Event Manager
Here are some other great reasons for using a simulator:
- The weather – we all know that feeling, you are all set to play, got your kit together and then you look outside, and it is torrential rain. Using a simulator means you can get your golf fix in any weather – no excuses now.
- It helps you work on and improve your technique – you will get enough stats to satisfy the mathematician in all of us.
- Its time efficient – you can fit golf in around your schedule and get a few practice hits in at any point in the day.
- It can be used for friendly competitions amongst friends or work colleagues – a quick 30 minute Nearest the Pin competition is great fun!
We think golf simulators are great and are helping to make the game more accessible. If you want to know more about hiring one of our simulators just give us a shout.
